Branding Case Study: How One Startup Rebrand Positioned It for Growth
Executive Summary
Likarda had outgrown its early-stage visual identity. The existing brand—heavy typography, a dark muted palette, and inconsistent accents—no longer matched the sophistication of the science or the expectations of investors, partners, and researchers. We led a strategic biotech rebrand to create a modern, scalable identity system grounded in credibility and differentiation, and extended it across core collateral and the website. The result was a cohesive brand foundation that better reflects Likarda’s cell therapy innovation and supports investor engagement, scientific communication, and growth.

The Need
When Likarda, a cell therapy biotech, came to us, their brand no longer reflected where the company was headed. The identity had been created early by a local design partner and had served its purpose, but it wasn’t built to scale with a maturing biotech organization.
Visually, the brand felt heavy and dated: a dark, muted teal palette, a bold italic slab sans-serif wordmark, and an inconsistent yellow accent that introduced noise rather than meaning. The design didn’t communicate agility, precision, or modern biotech credibility—especially for audiences like investors, strategic partners, and scientific stakeholders who evaluate professionalism fast.
Likarda needed a brand that could stand alongside top biotech firms while staying distinctive. The goal wasn’t to “make it prettier.” It was to create a strategic, scalable identity system that could support market positioning, investor relations, and continued growth in the competitive cell therapy space.
The Challenge
Rebranding a biotech company isn’t just design polish. It’s the intersection of scientific credibility, category expectations, and differentiation—without slipping into biotech cliché.
Inconsistent, Outdated Visual System
The existing identity lacked harmony. Typography and color choices felt misaligned with the precision and complexity of Likarda’s science, and the overall composition conveyed weight rather than innovation.
Differentiation Without Generic Biotech Tropes
Biotech is filled with the same visual shortcuts: blue gradients, molecule icons, and “science clipart.” Likarda needed to look like it belonged in the category without blending into it.
Scalability Across Technical and Commercial Contexts
Likarda communicates to multiple audiences—scientists, investors, partners—and the brand had to remain consistent across investor decks, scientific presentations, web, and corporate materials. The old identity didn’t scale cleanly across formats or contexts.
The Approach
We ran the rebrand through a structured process led by Bill Schick (FCMO), treating identity as a business tool: clarify perception, build trust, and support growth.
Step 1: Align Brand Direction to Market Position and Business Goals
We started with stakeholder interviews and market/competitive review to define how Likarda needed to be perceived: scientifically credible, modern, agile, and distinct in cell therapy. Those insights guided the identity choices so the design wasn’t aesthetic guesswork—it was tied to positioning.
Step 2: Modernize the Wordmark and Core Visual Signals
We refined the wordmark using a sleek contemporary sans-serif typeface, removing the outdated italics and slab structure. This immediately shifted the brand from “early-stage lab” to “modern biotech.” We also moved to a black wordmark to create a premium, confident anchor across applications.
Step 3: Create a Brand Mark With Meaning and Ownability
We designed a new icon to represent Likarda’s work in cell therapy and dynamic cellular structures without relying on tired biotech imagery. The mark features a blue cellular form encapsulated within overlapping purple and aqua elements, forming a subtle triangle—communicating stability, innovation, and scientific precision. The design was built to remain recognizable and scalable across digital and print.
Step 4: Build a Complete Brand System and Deploy It Where It Matters
We developed a cohesive system of colors, typography, and usage rules and extended it into real-world assets: brand guidelines, business cards and stationery, investor materials, and scientific presentation templates. We also translated the refreshed identity into a new website experience designed to communicate credibility immediately to investors and partners.
The Solution
Likarda received a modern identity system designed to scale with the company and reinforce its role in cell therapy innovation.
The updated wordmark and palette created a stronger, more premium brand signal. The new icon gave the brand a distinctive visual anchor tied to the science without looking generic. The broader system—guidelines, templates, collateral, and website—created consistency across technical and commercial contexts, giving the company the tools to communicate clearly as it grows.
The Results
The rebrand transformed Likarda’s presence from early-stage and inconsistent to modern, cohesive, and credible.
A streamlined wordmark and refined visual system aligned the external brand with the sophistication of the science.
A distinctive, scalable iconography system strengthened recognition while avoiding category clichés.
Brand guidelines, a new website, and updated templates created consistency across investor engagement, scientific communication, and partner-facing materials.
What Changed and Why It Worked
Before, Likarda’s brand looked heavier and less precise than the work the company was actually doing—creating unnecessary friction in high-stakes conversations with investors and partners.
After, the identity matched the reality: modern, scientifically credible, and differentiated without gimmicks. In biotech, perception isn’t fluff—it’s a credibility filter. This rebrand reduced that friction and gave Likarda a scalable platform to communicate clearly and compete like the serious cell therapy player it is.
